Beautiful or Functional "Have nothing in your home that is not beautiful or functional" -- Frank Lloyd Wright
I've been trying to hew towards this saying recently. I'm working on 'life as user interface.'
One of my steps along this path has been to throw out all my CD and DVD cases and the accompanying papers. I'm reminded of the scene from the movie Labyrinth where the trash lady hands the teddy bear to Sarah, and something else, and then more...
I haven't lost any value or beauty by throwing out my DVD and CD cases. I keep my discs in a big folder instead. It uses much less space, and it's easier to find discs.
On the other hand, throwing away my cases and paper really upset someone who gave several of the discs to me. They said that it ruined the movies. This does not seem to be a rare reaction. I've noticed that I don't want to throw out the pretty pieces of paper that come with my DVDs and CDs. Why is that? Ritual addiction?
Nice email signature from John Cowan: A rabbi whose congregation doesn't want to drive him out of town isn't a rabbi, and a rabbi who lets them do it isn't a man. --Jewish saying
Makes me wish I had a rabbi to tell those uncomfortable truths.
